Journal for the Study of Religion (JSR) remains the premiere journal in South Africa for research in the academic study of religion and religions. The journal is published twice a year by the Association for the Study of Religion in Southern Africa (ASRSA). JSR is on the list of accredited journals by the Department of Education (DoE).
Journal for the Study of Religion is a forum for South African as well as international researchers in the academic study of religion. Recent issues have featured articles by international scholars from University of Chicago; Collège International de Philosophie, Paris; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; San Diego State University; Ben-Gurion University; University of Wisconsin, Madison; University of Zambia; Stetson University, Florida; Hamburg University; Syracuse University; University of California; and Harvard University. The interdisciplinary character of the journal is reflected in the publication of articles by prominent authors in the fields of literary studies such as Wayne Booth and Antie Krog; in social anthropology such as Jean Comaroff and John Comaroff; and history of Religions such as Kees Bolle and David Carrasco. While publishing articles by both established and emerging researchers, JSR also features occasional thematic issues, which in recent years have included special issues on ''Religion, Rhetoric and Politics'', ''Women's Spirituality'', ''Religion and the Imagination of Matter'', and ''Religion and Minority Literatures''.
JSR is distributed nationally to institutions and individuals through International Subscription Services (ISS). Since 1999, the editorship of the journal has been located at the University of Cape Town, with Professors Abdulkader Tayob (1998-2002) and David Chidester (2003-present).
